Halloween night this year turned out to be very different for me than usual! I did my civic duty, doling out candy to little ghouls and goblins that visited. When all was silent once again, I noticed that the northern lights had decided to give ME a treat to share! I grabbed my gear and shot a couple test shots through the clouds, then headed off to find clearer skies.

Thankfully I didn't have far to go. White's crossing, near Willow, was mostly clear, and the touch of clouds left added interest my shots. I was amazed at how the photos turned out, considering the huge lights on the railroad crossing nearby. I had only one visitor, a state trooper wanting to know who was hanging out in the parking lot of a long abandoned laundromat, on Halloween night. Probably thought Granny would be egging the place, spraying my gang tags on it or something...
Anyway, enough rambling, enjoy the treats I've shared!

Looking for your Line of Birds' email login page?

There are two easy ways you can access this:

  1. Go to the main menu of lineofbirds.com and hover over the "sign in" menu button, then click on "email" when it drops down.
  2. Simply type (or copy and paste) mail.lineofbirds.com into your browser's address bar.

Once there you may encounter a message from Gmail saying you are already logged in with another account, but don't worry! Below that is the option to "switch accounts". Click this, and it will take you to a login form where you can type YOUR username and password, just be sure to log off using the link in the upper right hand corner of your email inbox when you're finished, if this is the case, because it means you're working on a shared computer where someone else also has a Gmail account!

Northern lights, or aurora borealis are active luminescent displays of colorful energetic particles dancing high in the atmosphere. The electrons that trigger the aurora travel along magnetic field lines from the magnetosphere to the high latitude atmosphere. These electrons transfer energy whenever they collide with an atom or molecule of the gases in the high upper atmosphere, which can cause those gas particles to "light up", like the gas in a neon sign.

There are great articles all over the internet on this subject, and I am by no means an expert, but I can share a few things I've learned, as well as links to other photographer's articles.
